専門は外国語教授法およびコミュニケーション心理学、教師教育学。
　スイス・ヌーシャテル大学（博士）。国際的な場での実践的な教授法の講師を１年に20回以上もつとめ、定評を得ている。一方的に教えるのではなく、集団のちからによって、よりよく学ぶことができるという教育理念を提唱する。それを実証する論文・著書も多数ある。講演でもそのような力量を教師が身につけることができるよう参加型のワークショップが取り入れられている。
　人はみずから何をどのように学ぶのか、決めることができる時、そのように感じる場合、よりよく学ぶことができ、もっと学びたいと思うものである。ちょっとした工夫で、生徒は皆、主人公となる。
　ワークショップ型で授業をすすめるのに自分が体験しないと、なかなか実践に踏みきれない。外国語を学ぶ楽しさを研修会のワークショップで体験することにより、自分の教室で生徒にあうよう応用することができるであろう。プルグラムは、単純な活動から、より複雑なものになっている。簡単な練習から歌や物語、そして身体の動きをともなったシャドウィング、会話も紹介する。
　生徒が主人公となり、当事者意識すなわち動機づけを高めるのに不可欠なことがいいくつかある。授業に生徒の生活が反映されるようにすることが大切である。教師が話すのを少なくし、教室の内外でさまざまな人とふれあい、かかわりあうよう授業を創造するのである。

Tim Murphey, PhD University of Neuchatel, Switzerland, is a popular international speaker, with about 20 presentations a year to teachers around the world about real classroom activities and possibilities. His workshops are very interactive and show teachers how to be more engaging and social in their ways of teaching, improving group dynamics and learning. His many research publications also support his recommendations. Be prepared to interact and enjoy yourself.

   People learn better when they feel like they have some control over what and how they learn. And when they feel that they can be successful with effort, they invest more in learning. We will look at many simple ways to give more control to learners and to allow them to have small successful experiences that can generate enthusiasm and excitement about language learning. Participants will actually experience many activities and can judge for themselves how enjoyable activities can be created and used effectively to motivate students. Murphey will go through a series of activities from least risky to more risky and ask participants to give feed back at all points inbetween.
   Some of the areas we will cover are how to give students a sense of agency (control) that motivates them, and how to make their lives the curriculum of your teaching. Student-centered teaching holds that students will learn more if teachers will lecture less and show students how to interact and learn with a variety of people in and out of the classroom. Simple exercises to more complex shadowing and conversational strategies will be demonstrated through songs and stories and movement.
